Screened Inner Cover
A screened inner cover swaps the solid panel of a standard inner cover for a full mesh screen, turning the top of the hive into a vent. It gives a colony maximum upward airflow in summer heat, carries damp air out of the hive in winter, and doubles as a ventilated base for moving or holding bees. Fits 5-, 8-, and 10-frame Langstroth equipment.
Features
- Full screen-mesh panel set in a solid wood rim
- Maximum top ventilation — vents heat and humidity straight up and out
- Helps control the winter condensation that otherwise drips on the cluster
- Works as a ventilated base for transporting or holding a colony
- Fits standard Langstroth hives in 5, 8, or 10 frame
How it works in real life
Set the screened inner cover on the top box, under your telescoping outer cover. In summer, the open mesh lets the heat a strong colony builds up escape instead of cooking the bees — prop the outer lid a finger's width for even more airflow on the hottest days. In winter, warm moist air rises, reaches the cover, and vents through the screen rather than condensing into cold drips over the cluster; pair it with an insulated or quilt top for the best moisture control. Because the whole panel is open, it moves far more air than a notched solid inner cover.
Before you order
Choose the size that matches your hive body — 5, 8, or 10 frame. A screened inner cover is built to sit under a telescoping outer cover, not to replace it; the outer cover still sheds rain and blocks light. If you want a closeable top with a notch entrance instead, see the solid wooden inner cover below.
Pairs Well With
- Wooden Inner Cover — the solid, notched version for cooler weather or a top entrance
- Screened Bottom Board with Insert — screen top and bottom for full-season airflow and easy mite counts
- Solid Bottom Board — a closed floor for cold-climate wintering
Specifications
- Panel: full screen mesh in a wood rim
- Sizes: 5, 8, or 10 frame Langstroth
- Use: top ventilation, under a telescoping outer cover
FAQ
What does a screened inner cover do?
It replaces the solid panel of an inner cover with mesh, so heat and moisture vent straight up and out of the hive. Beekeepers use it for hot-weather airflow, winter moisture control, and ventilated transport.
Do I still need an outer cover?
Yes. The screened inner cover provides ventilation but is open mesh — keep your telescoping outer cover on top to shed rain and block light.
Can I leave it on through winter?
Many keepers do, to vent the moist air that otherwise condenses and drips onto the cluster. Pair it with an insulated or quilt top for the best results in cold climates.
Which size do I order?
Match it to your hive body — 5, 8, or 10 frame Langstroth.
