Serrated Uncapping Knife
A Z-shaped manual uncapping knife with a double-sided serrated edge. The Z-bend lifts your knuckles off the work surface for cleaner strokes and less fatigue over repeated frames; the serrated blade saws through wax cappings with a back-and-forth motion that's faster than a smooth-edge slice for thick or partially crystallized honey caps.
Features
- Double-sided serrated cutting edge
- Z-type bend in the handle for ergonomic clearance from the bench surface
- Polished stainless steel blade
- Wooden handle secured with brass rivets
- Approachable angle of attack — work from above the frame without bending your wrist
How it works in real life
Hold the frame steady on your uncapping bench. The Z-shape lifts the handle above the level of the comb, so as you saw the serrated blade back and forth across the wax cappings, your knuckles never drag along the bench or the comb itself. The serrated edge bites into the wax instead of compressing it — useful when honey has slightly crystallized at the surface (common in cool storage) and a smooth blade would just smear it. After enough strokes to clear one side of the frame, flip and repeat. Brass rivets keep the wooden handle secure through years of use and washing.
Before you order
This is a manual cold knife — it requires more force per stroke than an electric heated knife. For high-volume harvesting (dozens of frames at a time), an electric thermostat knife saves time and effort. The serrated edge is the right choice when you're working with cappings that have firmed up; for fresh warm honey, the smooth double-sided knife slices faster. Many beekeepers keep both types and pick based on the day's honey condition.
Pairs Well With
- Portable Uncapping Bench — sits on a 5-gallon bucket, gives you a workspace for uncapping
- Capping Scratcher Deluxe Plastic — gets the spots the knife misses
- Double-Sided Uncapping Knife — smooth-blade Z-shape alternative
- Electric Uncapping Knife w/Thermostat — heated upgrade for high-volume harvesting

Frequently Asked Questions
Why a serrated blade instead of smooth?
Serrated edges saw through wax with less force than a smooth blade, especially when cappings have firmed up. If you ever harvest honey that's been sitting in cool storage and the cappings feel a bit hard, the serrated blade handles it without smearing. For fresh warm cappings, a smooth blade slices faster, but the serrated is the more versatile choice.
What does the Z-shape do?
It lifts your handle above the level of the blade. Without the Z, your knuckles drag on the bench (or worse, on the comb) as you cut. With it, you have clean clearance for repeated frames — important if you're uncapping more than a few at a time.
Will it cut through frozen-solid wax cappings?
No — at that point you need to warm the frames first. The serrated edge handles firm cappings fine, but truly frozen wax is hard enough to dull or chip the blade. Bring frames to room temperature or warm in a heated room before uncapping.
How do I clean it?
Hand wash in warm water immediately after use. The serrations need a small brush to clear sticky honey from between the teeth. Dry the wooden handle completely before storage. Don't put it in the dishwasher.
