Queen Cage/Roller Cage
The queen bee cage — also called a roller cage — is a small plastic cage for holding a queen securely while you mark her, move her between colonies, or introduce her to a new hive. It keeps her contained and ventilated without pressing on her, so the work gets done without risking the queen.
What it's for
Any time the queen needs to be held still and safe: dotting her with a queen marking pen, carrying her from one box to another, or caging her during a slow introduction to a new colony. The vented walls keep air moving so she stays comfortable while she is confined.
How to use it
Coax the queen into the cage and close it. Hold her there while you mark, move, or introduce her, then open the cage at the right spot to release her. Work over the open hive or a flat surface, so that if she slips free she drops back toward the frames rather than onto the ground.
Pairs well with
- Posca Queen Bee Marking Pen — color-code the queen while she is caged
- One-Handed Queen Catcher — catch her off the comb first
- Stainless Queen Clip — another option for holding a queen
